Recently at Amber Support, we marked International Day for Guide Dogs with a special visit and an inspiring learning experience – all thanks to Alfie, who has been leading a brilliant project close to his heart.
Over the past few weeks, Alfie has dedicated himself to educating others about visual impairment. He created and delivered a powerful presentation titled ‘A Day in the Life of a Blind Person’, offering everyone the opportunity to step into the shoes of someone living with sight loss. Through practical activities such as blindfolded cane-walking and demonstrations of specialist equipment, Alfie gave valuable insight into the challenges faced by blind and partially sighted people, while also showcasing the tools that help make daily life more accessible.
To bring the learning to life, Alfie also arranged a visit from Guide Dogs UK, welcoming Derick and his guide dog Costa. We learnt about the training guide dogs go through, the vital role they play in supporting independence, and the staggering £50,000 cost to train just one dog – funded entirely through donations. It was a fantastic and thoughtful day – educational, eye-opening, and deeply moving. Everyone left feeling more aware, more informed, and incredibly inspired by Alfie’s commitment to raising understanding and inclusion.🌻
